St Bonaventure Skills and Training Centre was blessed and opened by Archbishop Emeritus William Slattery on May 4.
The centre, built and equipped with private funds, aims to provide much-needed basic skills for unemployed youth. Training in carpentry and joinery, welding, farming and sewing are available, with plans to expand this offering. The centre is situated on the land of the La Verna Retreat Centre adjacent to the Vaal Barrage.
The centre, a registered welfare organisation, has provided skills training to 35 people since last year.
Running costs are funded by minimal fees and by selling some of the products produced in the centre. The Board is seeking funding from commercial enterprises and private donors and there is also an opportunity to sponsor students attending one of the six-month programmes.
