Salesians of Don Bosco Gather for Annual Provincial Assembly
By Fr Vaclav Klement SDB – Salesians of Don Bosco from South Africa, Lesotho, and eSwatini recently convened for their annual provincial assembly at Bosco Youth Centre in Walkerville, Johannesburg. Thirty Salesian priests, brothers, and young Salesians gathered to celebrate their patron, Blessed Michael Rua, and strengthen their bonds of fraternity.
A highlight of the assembly was the celebration of Fr Edmund O’Neill’s Golden Jubilee of priesthood. Additionally, the assembly welcomed newly arrived missionaries from other African provinces and witnessed the profession of faith by newly appointed community leaders (rectors). The 30 Salesians range in age from 25-84 and hail from 18 different countries.
The two-day gathering focused on building an accompaniment culture, a key aspect of the Salesian approach to living the Church’s synodal journey. Salesians who had completed the “Salesian School of Accompaniment” shared insights and practical tips on personal and spiritual accompaniment.
The assembly also delved into the theme of Salesian Missionary Animation, in light of the 150th anniversary of Salesian Missions in 2025, with the theme Give Thanks – Rethink – Relaunch. Participants discussed ways to foster a missionary spirit among Salesians and lay partners, including:
- Encouraging youth missionary volunteering
- Strengthening the missionary presence in schools
- Establishing missionary memorial rooms in communities
- Celebrating Mission Day with creativity
To foster a sense of global connection, the assembly members exchanged gifts and watched video messages from confreres and novices serving in various countries around the world.
The assembly concluded with a festive braai, further strengthening the bonds of fraternity among the Salesians.
