Story and photos by Mark Kisogloo – The Maronite Parish of Our Lady Of Cedars held a parish festival celebrating the feast day of St Maroun on February 9.
Maron, also called Maroun or Maro, was a 4th-century Syriac Christian hermit monk in the Taurus Mountains whose followers, after his death, founded a religious Christian movement that became known as the Maronite Church, in full communion with the Holy See and the Catholic Church.
Fr Jean Yamine, Superior of the Maronite Church of South Africa, celebrated Mass together with Fr Elie Saade, Vice-Superior and Parish Priest of Our Lady Of Lebanon. An Image of St Maroun was blessed in the Mass and a special prayer recited by parishioners asking for his intercession.
Fr Jean officially opened the Festival after Mass with a short prayer. Specifically showcasing Lebanese culture and Cuisine, a full day’s entertainment was provided by parishioners in the form of traditional Lebanese Dabke Dancers, Belly Dancers, Drummers and a DJ. Various traditional Lebanese Foods as well as a beer garden and more were on offer.
