Archbishop installed
More than 6000 people, including 22 bishops, Christian leaders, politicians and other dignitaries witnessed the installation of Archbishop Stephen Brislin as the fourth archbishop and tenth ordinary of Cape Town at the Velodrome in Bellville. The former bishop of Kroonstad in the Free State told the crowd that he was pleased to have moved to “the most beautiful city in the world”.
Tragedy before blessing
Five members of the Sacred Heart Society died in a bus accident on their way to a blessing ceremony of five Stations of the Rosary at the shrine of Our Lady of Bethlehem, Free State. The stations, which were blessed by Bishop Jan de Groef, were dedicated in their honour.
Romero: Santo Subito!
El Salvador’s bishops have agreed to write a letter to the Vatican calling for the canonisation of Archbishop Óscar Romero, who was assassinated by agents of the country’s military junta while saying Mass on March 24, 1980.
Editorial: Fruits of Shroud
“We may never learn the whole truth about the Shroud of Turin,” Günther Simmermacher writes in his editorial, but for Catholics, “the truth of the Shroud can be found in its fruits: the deepening of faith of those who believe in it”.
