Blasphemy Warning Needed

Advisory-Blasphemy

Clive Kairuz – As a concerned Catholic who is deeply troubled by the growing acceptance of blasphemy in modern entertainment, it pains me that while movies and shows carry warnings for sex, nudity, and language, there is no recognition of blasphemy — the casual or profane misuse of God’s holy name.

Do other faiths tolerate hearing their deity mocked or cursed on screen? Yet Christians have grown desensitised to this grave offence. To hear the sacred name of our Lord used in vain — often combined with profanity — is not simply “offensive” but also sacrilegious. It wounds our relationship with God and dulls our reverence for the divine.

Adding to this sadness is the fact that the same actors and public figures who use the world’s stage to speak passionately about politics, climate change and social justice remain silent on this issue. At events like the Oscars or the Golden Globes, celebrities often speak as moral voices, yet none seem willing to defend the honour of God’s name. Perhaps they fear it would cost them professionally — but silence in the face of blasphemy only deepens the cultural wound.

The Southern Cross’s voice carries great influence. I humbly ask you to consider supporting a movement to raise awareness of this issue — urging the entertainment industry to add a B for Blasphemy in content ratings and for all Christians to challenge the normalisation of taking the Lord’s name in vain.

Such a campaign could awaken consciences, remind believers of the sacredness of the Name above all names, and call Christians everywhere to stand for reverence in public life. It would be a prophetic act — truth spoken with love to a world that has forgotten what holiness sounds like.
