Peace is a gift that can easily be destroyed through petty gossip and speaking ill of others, Pope Francis said. People who receive and give the sign of peace “should be men and women of peace” and not ruin “the peace made by the Holy Spirit with your tongue,”
Loving wealth destroys the soul, and cheating people of their just wages and benefits is a mortal sin, Pope Francis said. Jesus did not mince words when he said, “Woe to you who are rich,” after listing the Beatitudes as written according to St. Luke, the pope said in a morning homily.
The path to holiness does not involve wrestling with some abstract boogeyman, but involves a “constant struggle against the devil, the prince of evil,” Pope Francis said.
In his new apostolic exhortation, “Gaudete et Exsultate” (“Rejoice and Be Glad”), released by the Vatican, the pope urged Christians not to think of the devil as an intangible construct but rather “a personal being who assails us.”
If Catholic morality in the past seemed so obsessed with preventing sexual sin that it ignored sins of injustice, today “we have gone to the opposite extreme,” seemingly concerned only with how people treat others, not with how they treat the gift of their bodies, the papal preacher said.
God’s love is never lacking, despite people’s sins and rejection of his presence in their lives, Pope Francis said at a Lenten penance service.
No disease makes a person impure; only sin does that, Pope Francis said. While being sick can impact a person’s whole being, “it in no way impairs or impedes one’s relationship with God.
