In the early months of his papacy, Pope Francis felt the urgent need to courageously preach on the actual existence of the devil, and the grave dangers of not taking his existence seriously (1 Peter 5:8-9).
The devil “seduces us; he knows how to appeal to our vanity and curiosity and we buy it all,” the pope said during his homily at Mass in the chapel of the Domus Sanctae Marthae where he lives.

In his new apostolic exhortation, “Gaudete et Exsultate” (“Rejoice and Be Glad”), released by the Vatican, the pope urged Christians not to think of the devil as an intangible construct but rather “a personal being who assails us.”

St John Paul II once called Lent a period of “spiritual training” for sharpening people’s ability to recognise “the voice of God and the insidious voice of the evil one.” But those skills need constant exercise. Priests need to have the right training to do battle with the devil and spiritually assist their people.
