Hurley returns to lighthouse

Archbishop Denis Hurley returned to the lighthouse on Robben Island for the first time in 73 years. The retired archbishop of Durban spent the first years of his life on Robben Island, where his father was the lighthouse keeper. Archbishop Hurley and a group — which also included Bishop Reginald Cawcutt (whose mother was born on Robben Island), Southern Cross editor Michael Shackleton, Sr Margaret Kelly OP, Sydney Duval and Mike Pothier — was given a comprehensive tour of the island.

Catholic education safe?

Ongoing negotiations between the Catholic Church and national and provincial education departments have provided hopeful signs that Catholic schools will be accommodated in the forthcoming Schools’ Bill. According to Sr Brigid Rose Tiernan, director of the Catholic Institute of Education, the Catholic Church is South Africa’s largest provider of education, after the state.

Inculturation needs patience

Addressing a Mariannhill meeting on the subject of inculturation, Fr Siegfried Mandla Jwara noted that “our Church is still on a pilgrimage of perfection. We have to be patient and cannot expect inculturation to bear fruit overnight.”
