Far East Rand Youth Deanery Host Annual Career Expo
By Kati Dijane – Kristo iNkosi Catholic Church in Kwa Tema, Springs, hosted 300 school learners and varsity graduates at a career expo on May 11.
The warm day started with the marimba youth band of the parish entertaining guests, who slowly made their way to the church. They set the tone for a great day, as the MCs of the event, Nondumiso Khumalo and Thabo Nyakale, said.
The dean of the Far East Rand Deanery, who is also the parish priest, Fr Chaka Motanyane (OP), expressed his appreciation to everyone present, while the youth chaplain, Fr Grace Basirika (OSM), officially opened the day with prayer. After a formal welcoming by the youth chairperson, Siyabonga Beson, professionals from various industry fields, including engineering, psychology, chartered accounting, healthcare, banking, culinary, pharmaceuticals, entertainment, emergency services, labour department and media, gave the youth a glimpse into what their various jobs entailed.
They also motivated them about issues, such as mental healthcare, the importance of perseverance and hard work, as well as attention to detail when it comes to drafting CVs.
On the issue of mental health awareness, clinical psychologist Motheo Nkadimeng talked about the effects of suicide, which, she said was one of the leading causes of teenage deaths in the country. She talked about the signs people should look out for, including self-isolation, especially if the person used to be outgoing, chronic sadness, and raising the topic of suicide. Nkadimeng added help is always at hand, especially at some local clinics, which offer social work services, as well as the national suicide crisis line, 0800 567 567.
Stalls of some professionals were also set up outside for the youth to ask more questions and submit their CVs. Lunch was served to everyone present. Fr Motanyane said the event was a resounding success and that he was happy about the turnout of the youth. “The purpose of my involvement in assisting the youth to organise this event was that I would like to see many young people make informed decisions about their future, career-wise.”
He also advised the youth to gear towards skills and careers that were in demand for higher chances to get employed. He also encouraged the youth to think outside the box and start businesses.
Siyabonga Beson echoed Father Motanyane’s sentiments, adding that they wanted to help address the high unemployment challenge through information. He also encouraged the youth to serve God and the church while they were still young and energetic.
