Nine Extraordinary Ministers Commissioned in Daveyton Parishes
By Kati Dijane – Nine extraordinary ministers were commissioned and blessed on Sunday, June 30 for the four Daveyton parishes of St Nicholas, St Lambert, St Monica and St Martin de Porres, in the Archdiocese of Johannesburg.
Five were commissioned at St Nicholas, while four, including Martin Mapiri, from the Malawian community living in South Africa, were blessed and commissioned by parish priest, Father Michael Miriti, at St Lambert’s parish.
The other new ministers include Jospeh Ntholeng, Johannes Zwane, Siyabonga Nkosi, Patrick Masondo, Joseph Ntamane, Jacob Skhondla, Jackie Mafuwane and Derick Phora.
At 11am, during another Mass celebration at St Monica, the Malawian community came in numbers from St Joseph, Actonville in Benoni, and Our Lady of Loreto, Kempton Park, to support and celebrate the special occasion. Speaking about the Gospel of the day, Father Miriti pointed to the important virtue of humility, which Jairus, one of the rulers of the synagogue, displayed when approaching Jesus to heal his daughter. He also talked about the importance of faith, showed by the woman who had a flow of blood for 12 years, touching the garment of Jesus, which he felt. “To reach Jesus, like this woman, we should have faith,” Father Miriti said, adding that sometimes, it takes the faith of our loved ones to heal us.
After Mass, the emotional Mapiri said, “My home parish in Mzuzu diocese in Malawi is also St Monica, which makes this parish very special. I am happy to finally be in this ministry, as I will serve my community, as well as that of the parishes in Daveyton and the Archdiocese of Johannesburg.”
Other extraordinary ministers were also present at St Monica, and, alongside Father Miriti, Deacon Vincent Morare and parishioners, were treated to lunch and the celebratory cake.
