Meet Sr Mary-John Mlangeni

Meet Sister of St Brigid Mary-John Mlangeni!

A brief history of her congregation in South Africa:
In 1954 the Sisters of St Paul of Ireland were invited by Archbishop John Garner of Pretoria to work in the Rustenburg Diocese in the North West Province of South Africa. In the same year, the Sisters opened a convent at Modimong Mission. “Modimong” means “God’s own place”. An important development at Modimong was the founding of a new Congregation of African Sisters, the Sisters of St Brigid. Their Mother House is still at Modimong.

Sr Mary-John Mlangeni was the second Mother Superior of the Sisters of St Brigid and she has served as school principal of the St Brigid Convent School in Modimong for over three tenures. The school was the seedbed of Catholic girls from across SA. These include philanthropist Precious Moloi-Motsepe, late politician Dr Edna Molewa and two of former homeland president Dr Lucas Mangope’s daughters.
