12 Youth Receive Confirmation at Seven Holy Founders Parish, Ratanda

Confirmation at Seven Holy Founders Parish in Ratanda, Johannesburg
By Kati Dijane – A joyful spirit filled the air at Seven Holy Founders Catholic Church in Ratanda in the Archdiocese of Johannesburg on May 4, as 12 young people stepped into a deeper commitment with their faith, receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation. Dressed elegantly in white and black — symbols of purity and maturity — they beamed with excitement as family, friends, and parishioners gathered to witness this sacred milestone.
The celebration took place within the Far East Rand Deanery and was presided over by Father Chaka Motanyane OP, the Dean of the Deanery. Also present was the parish priest, Father Francis Kajjubi, OSM, who warmly welcomed the congregation. The choir also took the special Mass to another spiritually fulfilling level.
The dean’s message of faith, discipline and hope
In his homily, Father Chaka spoke passionately to the newly confirmed and the wider congregation about the importance of education and discipline as key pillars for a brighter future. “Your faith is not separate from your everyday life,” he said. “As confirmed Catholics, you are called to live with purpose—at home, at school and in your communities.” He added that with the Holy Spirit as a guide, the youth must do the work, be disciplined, stay focused and remain rooted in their values.
He encouraged the youth not to see Confirmation as the end of their catechetical journey, but as the beginning of a deeper walk with Christ.
Scripture comes alive
The readings of the day added rich spiritual context to the celebration. The first reading from Acts 5:27-32, 40-41 reminded the congregation of the courage of the apostles, who stood firm in their faith even in the face of persecution. “We must obey God rather than men,” Peter declared—an invitation for the confirmands to be bold witnesses of their faith, even when it’s difficult.
The responsorial Psalm (Psalm 30:2, 4-6, 11-13) was a song of praise and gratitude—“You have turned my mourning into dancing.” A fitting echo of the joy and hope that radiated from the young people who received the Holy Spirit.
The Gospel reading from John 21:1-19 showed the risen Jesus calling Peter to leadership and love. In the same way, the newly confirmed are called to serve, love, and take on new roles in the Church.
A blessed hall and a feast for all
The day was made even more special with the blessing of the parish’s newly refurbished hall. Father Chaka led the prayer and sprinkling of holy water, giving thanks for a space that will now host many more community gatherings, catechism classes and parish events.
After the spiritual celebrations, the community came together to share a meal. Tables were filled with hearty dishes, joyful conversations and of course, great music.
