Farewell to Mr and Mrs Sehohoana Johannes and Masebina Claurina Kao
By Bokang Tsoanamatsie – Maria Mamahloko Parish, of the Archdiocese of Maseru, held a farewell for their dedicated parishioners, Mr Sehohoana Johannes Kao and Mrs Masebina Claurina Kao, who passed away on June 7, 2025, and June 14, 2025, respectively. This devoted couple had been suffering from various illnesses for an extended period, with Mr Kao passing away first, followed by his beloved wife seven days later.
Mr Johannes Kao was born on November 11, 1938, in Qacha’s Nek, while Mrs Claurina Kao was born on October 1, 1948, in the Eastern Cape. They are survived by two sons, two daughters-in-law, and grandchildren.
In their obituary, it was noted that this esteemed couple first met in East London, where Mrs Masebina was employed as a nurse, and Mr Kao was there on an official visit. They were united in Holy Matrimony in 1972 at Matatiele and subsequently relocated to Maseru, initially settling in Maseru West before moving to Ha Thamae, which remained their home. They were active parishioners of Maria Mamahloko, an outstation of Our Lady of Victories Cathedral, where they were well-known for their charitable contributions to those in need.
Mr and Mrs Kao were passionate about education and dedicated themselves to ensuring that underprivileged children received schooling at the nearby Itekeng Roman Catholic primary school, later facilitating their advancement to high schools and tertiary education. This noble mission was financed from their personal resources, benefiting numerous children from their village of Ha Thamae.
Their requiem Mass took place at Maria Mamahloko, celebrated by Fr Daniel Nkesi with Fr Kao, Fr Paul Sebilo, Fr Lehlohonolo Ramochele, Fr Allard Bohali, and F. Paseka Monikazi. The former Prime Minister of Lesotho, Honourable Pakalitha Mosisili, attended the service, as his daughter is married into the Kao family. The Honourable Speaker of Parliament, Tlohang Sekhamane, was also present, along with several ministers of the Kingdom of Lesotho, including Hon Neo Moteane and Hon Tseliso Mokhosi, as well as other government dignitaries, reflecting Mr Kao’s extensive service to the government of Lesotho across various sectors.
Mr Kao was affiliated with the Sacred Heart Sodality, while Mrs Kao was associated with the St Anne Sodality. Both sodalities conducted their final rites at the burial site of the deceased couple.
May their souls, along with the souls of all the faithful departed, find eternal peace.
