Via Lucis – Way of Light Hymn

Monsignor Vincent Hill composed this beautiful hymn for the Via Lucis Stations of the Cross.  It fits the tune of “Easter Glory fills the sky” by James Quinn SJ. We have included a video of a recording of the original tune.

  1. Jesus Risen

Empty Tomb the women find – Alleluia!

Empty shrouds He left behind.  – Alleluia!

“Whom d’you seek among the Dead ? –  Alleluia!

Jesus?  –  risen  as He said?”   – Alleluia!  Luke 24:1-12

2. Empty Tomb

John and Peter hasten there,

At the door they stoop to peer.

Of His Body, not a trace

But the cloth that bound His Face.  John 20:1-9

3. Mary Magdalen

“If you took Him, tell me where

You have hid my Master dear.”

“Mary, Mary !” – “Master sweet !”

“Cling no more about my feet!” John 20:11-18

4. Road to Emmaus

“We have met Him on the road,

Suddenly, beside He strode.

Sad events He did explain,

Why the Passion, why the pain.”  Luke 24:13-35

5. Breaking of Bread

“First, our ignorance He’d heal,

Joined us for our evening meal,

Showed us why He’d suffer’d, bled;

– We knew Him as He broke the Bread.” Luke 24:13-35

6. “See My Hands”

Risen Jesus from the Tomb,

Stands now in the Upper Room;

Risen glory He conceals,

Risen Body He reveals.  Luke 24:35-45

7. “Forgive Sins”

Jesus said:  “Peace be with you!

As God sent me, I send you too:

Peace I leave you.  Peace I give,

With Spirit’s power to forgive.” John 20:19-25

8. “My Lord & My God”

(Lest his hopes might him deceive)

Thomas said he’d not believe

Jesus came, his doubts to chide:

“Thomas, touch my hands and side.” John 20:20-31

9. At the Lake

In vain they cast their nets all night.

Jesus called:  “Search to the right!”  –

All the net could hold, and more,

Thus they knew Him on the shore. John 21:1-14

10. “Feed My Sheep”

Shepherd, seek the sheep that strayed,

Come to contrite Peter’s aid;

Strengthen him to be the Rock,

Make him shepherd of Your Flock! John 21:15-19

11. “Go out, Baptise”

“Go and preach to every nation,

Bring good news to all creation;

Who believes you shall baptise –

But lacking faith, the sinner dies.” Matt.28:16-20

12. “I go to My Father”

Though we see His face no more

He is with us as before.

Glory veiled, He is our Priest,

His true Flesh and Blood our feast Mark 16:19-20

13. Waiting with Mary

Before He rose into the sky

He promised Power from on high:

“Back to the city then, and stay

In the Temple.  Wait and pray!”   Acts 1:12-14

14. Pouring out the Spirit

Send your Spirit, Lord, we pray,

To all your faithful ones today.

All our hearts with love renew;

Let the whole world love you too! Acts 2:1-4
