Rooted in nearly a century of Catholic educational tradition, Pax  College in Mashashane, outside Polokwane, took an important step towards  securing its future on 28 October, when the Pax College Alumni  Association signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Limpopo  Department of Education, the Brothers of Charity and the Pax School  Governing Body.

The agreement marked a significant milestone in efforts  to safeguard the institution’s Catholic heritage, preserve its  educational legacy and strengthen its future for generations of  learners.

Ahead of the signing, Newzroom Afrika (DStv channel 405) conducted a  special media interview with Lesetja Kganyago, Governor of the South  African Reserve Bank and one of Pax College’s distinguished former  pupils. The interview took place at 9.20am.

Kganyago is among several prominent South Africans whose educational  journeys began or continued at Pax College. Others include:

-Father Smangaliso Mkhatshwa – Catholic priest, anti-apartheid activist,  former Deputy Minister of Education and former Executive Mayor of  Tshwane.

-Mosiuoa Lekota – Former Minister of Defence and founding leader of the  Congress of the People (COPE).

-Fanyana Mazibuko – Veteran educationist, Black Consciousness activist  and former teacher at Morris Isaacson High School, where he taught  several prominent leaders of the 1976 Soweto uprising.

-Michael Kitso Dingake – Liberation struggle veteran, author and former Robben Island prisoner.

-Bishop Jeremiah Madimetja Masela – Catholic Bishop of Polokwane.

Established in 1928 through the work of the Brothers of Charity, Pax  College played an important role in Catholic education, particularly  during the segregation and apartheid eras. Over the decades, the  institution educated and formed generations of young people, some of  whom went on to make significant contributions to South African public  life, education, the Church and the struggle for liberation.

The signing of the MoU brought together the alumni association,  government, the religious congregation that helped establish the  institution and the school governing body around a shared commitment to  Pax College’s continued development.

For former pupils, the agreement also represented an opportunity to give  back to an institution that helped shape their lives. Through this  partnership, the signatories seek to ensure that Pax College’s history,  Catholic identity and contribution to education are preserved, while  providing a stronger foundation for the generations of learners who will  follow.
