Celebrating Mass in St Peter’s Basilica, the pope said the Bible, especially the Acts of the Apostles, makes it clear that the Holy Spirit brings a real power to change to individuals and the church.
The Gospel of John describes how the Holy Spirit is given to the apostles: the risen Jesus breathing on the apostles to impart the Holy Spirit. This is Pentecost. The power of the Spirit not only authorises, but also empowers the apostles.
The view I have of God and the view I have of myself are intricately entwined. Knowing our original source gives me a firm direction towards my ultimate goal; gives me also the wisdom by which I come to direct my life. Without this there is a great emptiness in our hearts that nothing, no experience or possession, and no other human can ever fill.
