Regina Mundi Sings For Mother Of Mercy Shrine
The Archdiocese of Johannesburg, in conjunction with the Mother of Mercy Shrine Fundraising Project, will be hosting the Mother of Mercy Music Extravaganza on 2 July 2022, at the Regina Mundi Church in Soweto.
The music concert is part of the archdiocese’s project to raise funds towards the completion of the Mother of Mercy Shrine. The shrine is situated on the slopes of the Magaliesburg Mountains, in Magaliesburg, west of Johannesburg.
The concert will feature top Catholic music artists, groups and choirs.
The captivating line-up includes Catholic artists such as The Light Twins, Thuso wa Sibini, Thulasizwe Ndlovu, Kgethang Konese, Tefo Motsepe and a number of various choirs from the Johannesburg archdiocese.
The Regina Mundi Church is internationally respected for its role during the struggle against apartheid. The church, whose name means”Queen of the World”, became synonymous with the struggle against apartheid. It was used as a meeting place for mass rallies, funerals and commemoration events from 1974 up to 1989.
“The Regina Mundi Church was a spiritual sanctuary for the downtrodden and the oppressed during the struggle for freedom”, Nelson Mandela said.
The church was declared a national heritage site in 1996.
“Concert goers can look forward to hearing some of their favourite songs being performed by The Light Twins, accompanied by our ever-so-daring energy on stage. We will be performing our recently-released single Motho Mang le Mang, and indeed the people’s favourite Catholic hymn Ikelelloeng,” said one half of The Light Twins Lebone Khunou.
“The opportunity to perform in South Africa’s largest Catholic church is something to marvel as a Catholic artist. This is one of those great moments when Catholic artists come together and put on a purely Catholic showcase of our beautiful Catholic hymns”, Mojatau said.
For Tefo Motsepe, to perform at the Regina Mundi Church goes well beyond just a performance on the day. “I was confirmed, and I went through my spiritual growth at the Regina Mundi Church. It gives me great pleasure and pride to be a part of this wonderful musical extravaganza. I’m humbled and motivated to be able to perform at the church which played a huge role in the struggle to achieve the freedom which, I as a young person enjoy today. Let’s come in numbers and make the Mother of Mercy Shrine a reality for future generations,” he said.
The church has also been a venue for memorable music performances since its inception. In 1998 it hosted a first-ever performance by the Grammy Award-winning Minnesota Orchestra in South Africa.
The Regina Mundi Church turns sixty in August. The Southern Cross magazine will be featuring special coverage of the sixtieth anniversary of the church in the August 2022 edition.
